At least 17 churches have been seized by militants or the new authorities and five others attacked or burned. Ministers of all denominations have been terrorised and abused, 40 have been kidnapped and 7 killed. Many have had their homes ransacked. Some fled to western Ukraine and carry on their work among refugees. Alex Zakharchenko head of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic has outlawed all but the orthodox, Roman Catholic, Islamic and Jewish faiths. He says he will fight all sects by which he means Protestantism and others. In Western Ukraine Russian Orthodox churches have also been attacked.
