Outreach to Jews in Budapest

Christian Witness to Israel Budapest Outreach

Budapest   ̶ we need your prayers!

Dear Praying Friends,

I’m excited to tell you that at this moment an enthusiastic team of seventeen CWI missionaries and volunteers are preparing to hit the streets of Hungary’s capital to enthusiastically share the good news of Jesus with thousands of Jewish people.

Posters asking the question, ’Who is This Man?’ have been appearing on buses, trams and elsewhere preparing the city for CWI’s joint evangelistic outreach with Jews for Jesus. As you read this, the amber light is showing for the volunteers as they train for an intense two weeks of outreach to Budapest’s 80,000 Jews and 1.5 million Gentiles.

Following a consecration service and an early night on Sunday, the lights turn to green and the teams hit the streets at 6.15 Monday morning for their first tract-passing “sortie”, catching early morning travellers on their way to work. After breakfast and a short break, the teams will go out again, sharing the Good News of Jesus from 10.00am to 12.30pm and then again from three in the afternoon till eight in the evening. And that will be the daily routine for the week.

Bringing light to a dark city

According to Medián, one of Hungary’s top polling firms, anti-Semitism is alarmingly high in Budapest. The poll, conducted in April, revealed that almost half of Budapest’s residents are anti-Semitic. Many subscribe to the myth of a worldwide Jewish conspiracy, almost a quarter of Hungary’s population believe the number of Jewish victims of the Holocaust is much lower than claimed and 40% of Hungarians believe their country bears no responsibility for what happened to its Jewish population during the Second World War.

Against that dark backdrop, we are taking the message of light and life, of love and peace to the capital of Hungary. And we do it because the Messiah who carried the burden of sin and broke down ‘the middle wall of partition’ in the first century is able to demolish the wall of hostility that separates Gentiles and Jews in the twenty-first century!

Pray for open hearts

This is a great outreach opportunity and you can share in it by praying with us for the team in Budapest next week. Pray that those on the outreach will work well together and that they will encounter Jewish people whose hearts God has prepared to receive the message of the Messiah. And pray that Gentiles will also turn from darkness to light and from the power of sin and death to the God that saves through faith in the Jewish Messiah. Pray that the team will be filled with God’s Spirit and wisdom as they share the life-giving message of Jesus the Messiah.

Thank you for being a fellow worker with us in this crucial ministry of telling Jewish people around the world about Jesus.

Wishing you God’s richest blessings,

Joseph Steinberg
