KAZAKHSTAN Nikolai, a 34-year-old husband and father of four, is a Christian in Kazakhstan. He has refused to pay fines imposed on him for meeting to worship with other Christians without permission from the government.
“I didn’t pay because I don’t consider myself guilty,” he explained. “These fines were illegal.”
Since 2013, Nikolai has been fined three times, jailed for five days, and forbidden from leaving the country. He now faces the confiscation of his mechanic shop.
